I spent much of last night combing the Googleweb for insight into how to build a gamurra and a gironea (your documentation was high on the list, salviati!) and I think I just might be able to knock a couple of these out before Pennsic. I can adjust my fitted kirtle "pattern" into a fitted gamurra bodice, adjust the sleeve pattern a bit, and play with attaching a gathered skirt into a bodice. The linen I'll use will be extremely downscale for my persona, but I'd rather be comfortable than gorgeous. :) And I'll look the part of an Italian person. Whoo hoo! I am so excited about making a new-to-me style of clothing.

In semi-related news, I've resubmitted a name change with the Golden Dolphin Herald. In seven months or so I'll (hopefully) officially be Signora Pippa Morosini; in the meantime, people are getting used to calling me Pippa instead of Millicent. I like it. :)

I spent a long while looking at your yellow giornea diary yesterday and that really inspired me. How did you decide how big to make your panels for the skirt? I understand taking the bodice waist measurement and multiplying/dividing based on the pleating and number of skirt panels. But before you cut the rectangular panel into two skirt pieces... how did you decide how long that panel would be? I can see the length of that panel determining how full each skirt piece is.

And yes, I promise to take pictures. :) No guarantee that there will be step-by-step photos, though. I'm terrible at photojournalling projects.

well, the length is whatever the bodice waist to floor measurement plus a bit for hemming is, and the width is whatever. Yes, really! If the width of the fabric is something other than 120cm (what I use for my skirt length) then I'll just use the width of the fabric for the rectangle length as that has the least fabric wastage. For fabric that is 120 wide and I want to use the width as the skirt drop, I'll go with whatever works for my fabric. If I have already bought it then I'll get my bodice and sleeves out of it then just divide up whats left into four rectangles. I think this is what I did for my yellow dress. Otherwise around one to one and a bit metres seems about right.
And pictures of the finished dress is good enough for me :D
