I spent much of last night combing the Googleweb for insight into how to build a gamurra and a gironea (your documentation was high on the list, [livejournal.com profile] salviati!) and I think I just might be able to knock a couple of these out before Pennsic. I can adjust my fitted kirtle "pattern" into a fitted gamurra bodice, adjust the sleeve pattern a bit, and play with attaching a gathered skirt into a bodice. The linen I'll use will be extremely downscale for my persona, but I'd rather be comfortable than gorgeous. :) And I'll look the part of an Italian person. Whoo hoo! I am so excited about making a new-to-me style of clothing.

In semi-related news, I've resubmitted a name change with the Golden Dolphin Herald. In seven months or so I'll (hopefully) officially be Signora Pippa Morosini; in the meantime, people are getting used to calling me Pippa instead of Millicent. I like it. :)

I built my gamurra from my fitted bodice pattern. It worked like a dream once the skirt was attached. Up until then it liked to ride up under my boobs.

Yeah, the weight of the skirt really helps keep the bodice where it's supposed to be.

Yay! Let me know if you need/want any help with the gamurra making. I've also got a giornea pattern if you'd like a copy (you can try on one of my giornee beforehand to see if any adjustments need to be made, although I wouldn't think so). Hooray for more Italians! :-D

Ooh, thank you so much for the offer. Would you mind if I came over sometime this week or weekend to try your giornea? While I can draft from pictures, it would be most helpful to see what it looks like in real life. :)

I have pretty much the same schedule. I'm pretty sure we're both open this Sunday, even. I was thinking it would be fun for the guys to hang out together too (and also suggested to J that they do so while we're at Pennsic, too).

I'm easy with beverages-- I'll drink pretty much any kind of juice, pop, water, etc.

Small warning: there may be a cake. My birthday is Thursday.

I'm going to call J tonight. I meant to last night but things got away from me.

As much as I'd love to have you guys over here, if anything is to be done AT ALL involving moving off the couch, our apt. is way too small. We'll bring the nibblies, though ;)

Altering a kirtle works fine for a gamurra. I just had to keep drafting them as I was loosing weight, so even by the time I made my first gamurra the alterations I would have had to do to get mykirtle bodice to just get it to fit..
well, lets just say I made a new one :D

The Gironea is easy and great in warm weather. I have two and the fabric for a third. One of mine is actually reversable (I know, reversable historical clothing.... but it wasn't really pre-planned that way, my mum bought 8 metres for a dress thinking thats how much she needed and then 3 for a gironea, but she needed something to line the gironea with, and I wanted t use the left over fabric from her dress for a gironea and needed something to line it with..... so we joined our ideas :D )

Will you post some pics once you are done?

I spent a long while looking at your yellow giornea diary yesterday and that really inspired me. How did you decide how big to make your panels for the skirt? I understand taking the bodice waist measurement and multiplying/dividing based on the pleating and number of skirt panels. But before you cut the rectangular panel into two skirt pieces... how did you decide how long that panel would be? I can see the length of that panel determining how full each skirt piece is.

And yes, I promise to take pictures. :) No guarantee that there will be step-by-step photos, though. I'm terrible at photojournalling projects.

well, the length is whatever the bodice waist to floor measurement plus a bit for hemming is, and the width is whatever. Yes, really! If the width of the fabric is something other than 120cm (what I use for my skirt length) then I'll just use the width of the fabric for the rectangle length as that has the least fabric wastage. For fabric that is 120 wide and I want to use the width as the skirt drop, I'll go with whatever works for my fabric. If I have already bought it then I'll get my bodice and sleeves out of it then just divide up whats left into four rectangles. I think this is what I did for my yellow dress. Otherwise around one to one and a bit metres seems about right.
And pictures of the finished dress is good enough for me :D
