Hubbyfink and I attended the Pet Adoption Meet-n-Greet at the Sterling PetCo yesterday and fell for a little orange tabby named Pumpkin. He's just over a year old and comes from a home with too many cats in West Virginia. We put in an adoption application and will visit the shelter Monday evening to get some two-on-one time and see if he'll be a good addition to our household.

I was very good and did not get choked up or tearful seeing kitties in cages. Nor did I want to adopt all of them. I'm getting either harder in my dotage or more sensible.

Kit and Margie got poked and prodded at the vet this morning. They're both healthy; although, Kit's heart murmur has become more pronounced and she's lost a pound since her last checkup. She gets to go back in May for a chest x-ray and ECG.

Yay.

Margie was an absolute terror: she spat, she hissed, she grumbled and growled, scratched and bit. Kit was the exact opposite: lovey, exploratory, fairly patient. Margie must've put up a fight while having blood drawn because she came back with bandages around both back legs. Let me tell you how pleasant it wasn't to get THOSE off her very furry legs. My left arm has brand new perforations and my right arm has numerous angry-looking slashes.

Yay.

I also got Basil's ashes while at the vet's office. They're in a highly polished wooden box. I'm not sure where I'm going to store the box. I don't need (or want) to see it every day, but I don't want to accidentally stumble across it when cleaning out the recesses of the basement either. Right now, the box is on the backseat floorboard because I forgot to take it inside when I took the girls back home.

I had an orange tabby named Paddington when I was in junior high. It's about time for another. :)

Awww ... I have a Pumpkin too!! Though I hope your Pumpkin, if you get him, will be nicer than mine. I don't think my Pumpkin was properly socialized when he was a kitten. *sigh*

Aw, he's so pretty. This Pumpkin was pretty sweet and wanted lots of scritches through the bars of his cage. We'll see how he does on Monday.

You didn't say "hoarder", but you did say "too many cats"...

Juliet is sweet and loving when she doesn't have anywhere to go (so I imagine she'd want attention if she was in a cage), but when she has the whole house at her disposal, she spends a lot of time hiding.

Just something to consider, since you're only getting to know Pumpkin in limited environments.

Good luck!

(OH, and the flame color is from orange x siamese genes, so she approves! :-)

I hope it wasn't a hoarder situation. His paperwork said that he was given to the shelter because the previous owner "has too many cats".

If it was an owner give up, it probably wasn't a hoarder (they don't usually turn in their own animals!), unless a relative did it or something.

It just may be that another cat had kittens and kittens are cuter or something.

Who knows.... Daisy was turned into the shelter for being too big. Ur? She's guinea pig sized!

When we got Trinity, it was because "she and the other cats (in the barn) didn't get along".

Who knew that the translation was "Trinity is a little jerk!" LOL

Animal Cops will sometimes go in and check on folks pre-hoarder status. Check on conditions, if all animals are in good shape despite being loved, make sure it is a load the person can put up with and sometimes try to take a few off the pre-hoarder's hands to avoid trouble from the start.

In some cases/places there are limits to how many animals a household can support and in those cases they'll ask for one or two to be surrendered to find them better homes.

Good luck finding another companion, whatever his/her color and breeding.

Beta highly approves of orange tabbies, but as his human, I feel compelled to warn you that my experience with my own and with the ones my parents have both rehabbed and been beholden to is that they are very sweet but not the brightest of cats. Not a reason not to adopt one though. I'd adopt another if I were looking...I was actually looking for orange kitties when we got Widget and Gizmo.

I am soooo okay with "not terribly bright". Margie's way too smart for my own good and gets in trouble out of boredom, I think.

Remember, Apprentice was named Apprentice because he was too dumb to be a real wizard. ;) We're all in favor of orange cats as well though.
