melaniesuzanne: (Born to shop)
We've had a shop-til-we-drop Saturday thus far. First stop, after the post office, was Toys-r-Us to snag birthday gifts for our neices. They're getting a Fischer Price "My First Dollhouse" plus "Grandma with baby carriage" and "Baby's bedroom furniture". I'm so excited for them! Next up was Tarzhay for toiletries and some household things.

Then, the main target for our shopping: Lowe's. We now have a gallon of exterior latex paint in the most gorgeous shade of royal blue -- not that there's a bad shade of blue -- called "Planetarium". Oh my goodness, this is going to be gorgeous on the tent. I also picked up some new brushes, tarps, and other paraphrenalia. We also found poles for the dayshade uprights and ridge, a metal sleeve for the ridge, and boards and a pole for a clothing rack for Pennsic. Of the wood and whatnot, we brought home only the sleeve and clothing rack pole; we'll go back in the Jeep so the long boards and poles can go on the roof rack.

Last stop was Eastern Mountain Sports to see if they carry Canvak. No dice, but Hubbyfink did get a cute pair of cargo pants on clearance. So, not a total loss.

When we're not spending money like we have some, we're cooperatively killing zombies (and being killed many, many times) in Left 4 Dead. We're having fun, but I can't say this is my favorite game. I want to stop and explore, but that gets you eaten. So, we run for it and shot anything that moves including party members occassionally.

No capes!

Spent much of the weekend running around in and/or reading about post-apocalyptia ("Fallout 3" and Oryx and Crake, respectively). I downloaded "Operation Anchorage" and "The Pitt," but I haven't begun either one. I've got kick-ass armor, guns, and companion; why should I give all that up to go someplace new? Oh yeah, because it's new and I'm starting to get bummed out by all the bleakness in my game and bedtime reading material. Perhaps I should focus on something with a happier ending.

I also downloaded lots of songs for "Rock Band 2." Spent a small fortune on downloadable content this weekend. And no, I'm not giving M$ my credit card number; I use the points cards. I've read too many horror stories about plugging one's CC into the Xbox.

Yesterday afternoon, before the cold front came in, was gorgeous. I was too wiped out from the little bit of packing and schlepping Hubbyfink and I did for [livejournal.com profile] smiep and [livejournal.com profile] thatpotteryguy on Saturday and the frenzy of housecleaning on Sunday to do much with the sun and warm temps. I still want to get a bike and see how far I can go on the trail.

While channel-surfing last night, we came across "The Incredibles." Hubbyfink's never seen it; I popped in the DVD so we could watch it without commercials. He loved it. I admit that it took a while before I was willing to watch it, but once I did I found it charming.

Inadvertantly finished another game. I started following the Fallout 3 main quest again and everything happened so quickly and then it was over. Ah well. I can go back to one of my previous saves and play on from there. Or I could start something new. It's not like we don't have a pile of neglected games waiting to be played.

I'm so very happy the sun has come back. The kitties are happy that windows are open and smell-o-vision is on. I'm hopeful that I can paint shelves on Sunday and continue with the craft room re-do.

That's pretty much all the news that's fit to print. It's been a trying work week, and that's all I'm going to say about that.
melaniesuzanne: (Blossoms by upsa_daisy)
I spent my lunch hour at Tarzhay doing a little retail therapy my part to stimulate the economy and picked up a couple of 360 games for the Hubbyfink (Call of Duty) and me (Bioshock). The cashier asked for my ID when she scanned Bioshock. I've never been carded for a game before. Hee!

(Question for fellow gamers: should I go ahead and get F.E.A.R 2 without having played F.E.A.R.? Or will I be missing out by not having played the original? I didn't let skipping to a sequel bother me for Resident Evil or Fallout or even Legend of Zelda. I'm not why I'm so concerned about it with this game, but I am.)

"Xanadu" and "Don't Walk Away" have been on near-continuous repeat on my ipod. My coworkers should be glad I wear headphones. Damn, Olivia Newton-John's got a high voice. I can't follow her in a couple of places and have to drop into a more alto-friendly harmony. Oof. Happily, Jeff Lynne's falsetto isn't too high for me. (Err... I should mention that the singing along happens in the Jeepfink, not the office. I'm not That Guy.)
melaniesuzanne: (Mouse & cheese)
I finished hubbyfink's linen shirt last night. It took only two hours to sew the wrists, neck, and hem because he's so small.

I (accidentally) finished Rock Band 2. I'd earned enough stars to play the eight song set for the Rolling Stone Rock Immortal Challenge and so I did. (OMG, so hard. Sight-playing Judas Priest, AC/DC, Metallica... I don't KNOW those songs!) So, I finished set (after getting booed off the stage once during the Judas Priest song), got a congratulatory note from Harmonix, and then the credits rolled. Buh? That's it? I didn't mean to finish the game! Happily, I can go back in and have my band continue to tour and play to my heart's content.

I also played a little Fallout 3 until I got too queasy to go on. Stupid first person perspective. I'm currently ransacking Tenpenny Tower and being indoors keeps making me ill.

[livejournal.com profile] zipmeister called to bust my chops about my new Xbox live bio and Jimmy D sent me a note warning me not to play with [livejournal.com profile] beaznuts because he's just too good. Bah. I'm not worried about playing with Beaz; he's intimidated by his big sister. ;) I am, however, cautious about playing with baby brother John because he's out to win no matter what. Just like his big sister. ;)

Oh, and? Happy Spring! Be sure and bundle up. Brrrr.

I've been Bobble-head hunting in Fallout 3 and found not only the alien blaster during my travels but also triggered (and found!) the Firelance. Muahahahahaha! Super Mutant Behemoths and Deathclaws vaporize reeeeeal good.

My reaction to seeing the first Deathclaw spot me and race towards my character with alarming speed? "Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit. Alien blaster!" Then, "What the [bleep] is that [bleeper] doing in Virginia?? I thought they were only in Maryland!"

I do a lot of talking back to the game and to myself when I'm really in the zone.

In Rock Band news, The Mooshniks have left the west coast and are currently playing in Austin. It cracks me up to see the band's name on banners in the venues and the logo I designed on my drumkit. I released my inner Mick Fleetwood (minus the skeeziness) and Simon Kirke last night. The drawback of that game is that it makes me want to buy more music. Need songs from Panic at the Disco, L7, The Donnas, and more. On the positive side, I have a LOT more respect for drummers. Seriously.
melaniesuzanne: (gaming: OMG pwnies! (ThinkGeek))
Last night Hubbyfink assembled our Rock Bank 2 instruments so he, [livejournal.com profile] pirategirleee, and I could let loose with our inner rockstars. We had a blast and Hubbyfink and I both fell asleep wanting to rock out a little more (but it was much too late and we were both very tired). By the way, PG, we unlocked the "Hello, Cleveland!" acheivement by playing the game last night. ;)

I've decided that I enjoy playing the drums more than singing. I spent the better part of the evening pretending to be a Nirvana-era Dave Grohl (or perhaps more aptly, Sheila E). I'm pretty good on the "medium" setting. We're going to need to download some new songs fairly soon.

I was home with a migraine yesterday. Gaming didn't cause this one; maybe it was a weather system or stress? We've had a pretty collosal re-org at work and there are rumors of layoffs on the 20th and I'm trying not to worry my pretty little head about it all, but we all know how well that works.

Baby brother John the football star participated in National Signing Day yesterday and accepted a football scholarship to Lambuth College. Not bad for a kid who played football for only one and a half seasons. Mom says their current kicker -- who will be senior this year -- is very strong on field goals and points-after-touchdown but not-so-good with kickoffs. Perhaps Johnny will be groomed for that role. The school is a private college and I'm boggling at the tuition, but the football and academic scholarships should cover at least half of that cost.

Some of Hubbyfink's coworkers are coming over tomorrow night to play DnD in the Man Palace. The guys had been playing at the DM's apartment, but the addition of Hubbyfink and someone else meant they no longer fit in the tiny abode. Hubbyfink asked if it was okay for them to play at our house (so cute!) and of course I said yes. We've even got lots of leftover chips and coke from the Super Bowl party so they're set for snacks. Hubbyfink asked if I wanted to play, but I think I'll cozy up with Fallout 3 instead and wail on some more Mirelurks and Super Mutants.
melaniesuzanne: (gaming: extra lives by feverof_fate)
My dog died. In game, I mean. I don't have a dog in real life; Margiekitten wouldn't put up with it! But anyway, my dog died and I'm pretty bummed out by that. I'm halfway tempted to load from a previously saved point and leave him in a safer location and then replay the spot where he died. It's not like he was a tremendous help, but I think I'd be happier knowing he was frolicking in the game world rather than lying dead on a Georgetown street.

Maybe Hubbyfink is right and I should just play shooters where I don't get emotionally invested in the characters. Maybe I should give FO3 a rest and move on to a more light-hearted game like "Left 4 Dead". (Maybe I should've gotten the PC version of the game which would allow me to mod the dog so he was immortal. I could also do the AWESOME light saber mod I saw on X-Play last night!)
melaniesuzanne: (gaming: extra lives by feverof_fate)
I have played waaaaaay too much Fallout 3 this weekend. Like, staying up until 4am Saturday and 2am Sunday way too much. Like, playing enough to go from "very evil" karma to "good" karma too much. My character is a Paladin! How the cr@p did that happen?? Oh yeah, I guess GAME SPOILERS ) would do that. Too bad I lost Jericho in the battle outside GNR; he would have been a hyooge help at the Germantown PD. *sigh* Guess I need to find another companion before I tackle that quest.

Interesting, to me, tidbit: the first-person perspective has finally made me nauseated. Running around in the museum is what did me in, I think. I had to pause the game and close my eyes for a few minutes and wait for the nausea to pass. I would have quit, but I wanted to finish the GNR quest which only took another fifteen minutes or so.

I wasn't watching my actions in "Fallout 3" and now I've wound up with an evil character. Okay, not evil, very evil. I've reached the Level 8 Reaver achievement.* I'm torn about this.

I mean, on the one hand it's made getting into Paradise Falls a WHOLE lot easier. The folks there actually get out of my character's way. And the notoriety from Three Dog's warning people about me in every other newsbreak is kind of fun. On the other hand, I'm not an evil person. I do have a mean streak and enjoy ye olde schadenfruede a bit too much, but I (me, Melanie) am Lawful Good/Lawful Neutral. My character has turned out Chaotic Evil. She's still doing good deeds for people but I'm tempted not to complete those "good" quests. I've taken to hunting down Regulators so I can fix/upgrade my gear. And I'd very much like to wipe out the town of Arefu simply because one of the town's protectors shot at me; I turned him into dust with my laser pistol.

This kind of stuff keeps me up at night (for about 30 minutes, anyway). Hubbyfink sort of helped. He reminded me that I am not my character; although, he wouldn't be able to play an evil character. He suggested I take a break and play "Gears of War" instead since there are no moral quandries and you can shoot anything that moves without repercussion (aside from return fire).

-------
*"Reaver? As in "Firefly"/"Serenity" reaver?" Hubbyfink asked.

"I don't think so," I replied. "I mean, I can drink blood (from blood packs, not people) to restore health, but I haven't resorted to cannibalism yet."
melaniesuzanne: (Devonshire: Pink houppe)
I raced home last night and immediately set to work drafting and cutting out a new overdress.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I cut out the front and back panels and back gore before Hubbyfink got home, at which point I took a break for dinner and realized I really didn't want to continue cutting out gores. I HATE (with the white hot hate of a thousand suns) cutting out gores. I whined. I moped. Hubbyfink reminded me that I could reset to Sunday night when I wasn't going to make ANYTHING this week. I decided he was right and played "Fallout 3" for a few hours (I fragged three Regulators! Took me forty-five minutes of getting shot down like a dog at the entrance to the Arlington metro, but I finally got them! I loves me some combat shotgun action, oh yes I do.)

I went to bed shortly after 11 and tossed and turned for a bit, working out the mechanics of the hat pattern [livejournal.com profile] danabren's been teaching me. I finally got up, grabbed scrap linen, and in two hours I had a reasonable facsimile of the inside of a flattish heart-shaped henin (the poofy hat thing underneath my icon's veil). I dug through my samples & leftovers basket and found a good fashion fabric with which to cover the infrastructure and a couple of choice fabrics for a new padded roll to sit atop the henin. And then I went to bed.

When I finish covering and decorating the hat, I'll post photos. I'm probably going to pass on the mucking huge veil for this event, but the headdress is still going to be soooo cool!
melaniesuzanne: (gaming: extra lives by feverof_fate)
Hubbyfink finished "Gears of War 2" last night. It's the first video game he's played to completion. He said he was a little disappointed and wanted to keep on playing when I asked how he felt about that achievement. Yeah, I know what he means; I've played through "Twilight Princess" and "Resident Evil 4" for the same reason (well, that and they're awesome games). He still has "Halo 3" to get into.

I'm still roaming the post-apocalyptic Virginia countryside in "Fallout 3". Found Arlington Cemetery, ransacked Arlington House and the metro stations yesterday. Also found the satellite array up in the northwest and then hit the NW edge of the game world and had to turn back. Ran into three Regulators who called me a villain (oops, I guess my karma's too low) and then shot me down like a dog on the highway. I'm still looking for Reston Town Center. I haven't braved the wilds of Maryland yet, beyond Seneca metro (I crossed a body of water so I'm assuming that was Maryland), nor DC as I got shot at by some Raiders on the DC side when I got too close to the Virginia waterfront.

One of these days I'll unwrap "Left 4 Dead" and get sucked into zombiepocalypse, but I'm pretty happy getting radiation poisoning and hacking giant scorpions and mole rats into tiny bits at the mo'.

Hubbyfink looked up twelve-step programs for FO3 addiction. I told him that chopping off my hands and destroying the game disc are not options.

We've been without cable TV or internet since we left our respective offices Wednesday. Thankfully the Comcast tech was prompt this morning and ran a new cable to the house (our old cable had been cut). Of course, I'm a little worried about the new cable because it's strung above ground from the post and through our back fence. Supposedly, it will be buried in four to six weeks.

New Year's Eve was a laid back affair chez [livejournal.com profile] ballistabob et [livejournal.com profile] belfebe. We all dined on lasagne and flan and toasted the new year with sparkling cider.

New Year's Day was less celebratory for me as I awoke with a migraine which didn't slip away until about 10pm. I missed [livejournal.com profile] thatpotteryguy and [livejournal.com profile] smiep's party and spent much of day whimpering in a darkened room. Fun.

But it hasn't been all parties and migraines, oh no. I've finally jumped in to "Fallout 3" and am faily hooked, despite all the anxiety attacks. I swear. I don't think I was this jumpy playing "Resident Evil 4". Thank goodness my character has high perception so she can detect enemy movement in the distance, but I still feel like every single thing is going to kill her (probably because everything in the wastes except an ant has taken her out). Gotta get more XP and better weaponry.

Winner!

Hubbyfink is enjoying "Gears of War 2" and has been playing for about three hours now. He's very happy with his Christmas gift (yay me for suggesting it to Mom and yay Mom for putting it under the tree). He prefers it to "Fallout 3" because your purpose in GoW2 is to mindlessly kill the bad guys whereas there's a lot of exploring and figuring out what to do in FO3. Yeah, I figured he was more into the straightforward shooter games. That's okay: more action/survival horror RPGs for me.

[And here I break to confess that I'm a terrible backseat gamer: "You missed picking up the gun back there. Oh! Grab that ammo. Yeah, pull the glowing lever. Wait, no. Shoot that thing!" Sometimes Hubbyfink has the patience of Job.]

I have to admit it is pretty fun watching his character carve the nasties up into little pieces with a chainsaw. And some day I'll get a chance to go after my "Left 4 Dead" zombies and explore "Fallout 3".

I'd forgotten how much I enjoy Carly Simon's voice. I have her greatest hits compilation (Clouds in My Coffee 1965-1995) which is in book form, so I usually forget about it when picking out CDs for roadtrips and/or for ripping to iTunes. But I remembered her last night -- as well as Billy Joel's greatest hits book -- and have added her to my new ipod's playlist. Go ahead and revoke my deeply-closeted-goth card.

In other news, back in October I won an award at work (because I'm awesome like that) and got a not insignificant chunk of gift cards to Best Buy. I saved those gift cards for Black Friday and scored an Xbox 360 for Hubbyfink's Christmas present and an 8Gig Nano as a happy for myself. Hubbyfink asked if he could go ahead and play with the 360 while I was in Williamsburg last weekend -- I said yes -- and he picked up "Fallout 3" (which was going to be under the tree) and has been playing it ever since. I watched him play for a while Tuesday night and now I want a crack at it. Especially since you can apparently play it in either first- or third-person perspective. I prefer third-person. Plus, we can almost see the bombed-out remains of our house from there.

We watched X-play's giftmas game guide last night and the top pick for the season is "Fallout 3" with "Left 4 Dead" coming in a very close second. (HINT ZOMBIES! HINT ahem) Unfortunately, one of the games I'd picked up for myself for the Wii this past summer ("Alone in the Dark") made the list of Games to Get for Gamers You Hate. Alas. It's still in the plastic wrap; mayhap we'll trade that and the bundled games which came with the 360 in at Game Stop.

Also, I'm even more confused about which game to get after viewing the "Rock Band 2" vs "Guitar Hero: World Tour" report. [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister says Rock Band because he has RB. LJ-less brother John says Guitar Hero because he also has RB. Augh!
melaniesuzanne: (wii)
[livejournal.com profile] aelf let [livejournal.com profile] annerism and me play with her Wii Fit Saturday evening and we both got hooked. In a fit of there's-nothing-on-TV-and-I-don't-want-to-do-laundry last night, I took my own Wii Fit for a spin.

The body test was appropriately disheartening and my chunky little bloated Mii was cruel but true. I started out the evening with a Wii Fit age of 43. After thirty minutes of games, I retested and dropped ten years off my Wii Fit age. Sweet. That hula hoop game is a killer, but I went from 81 hoops/loops/rotations/whatever to 289 once I figured out how to catch the other hula hoops being thrown at my Mii.

Surprisingly, I was sweaty and kind of tired after thirty minutes of running, jumping, gyrating and posing. I think this will be a decent alternative on those I-really-don't-want-to-go-to-the-gym days.

I got one!

I was the second person in Best Buy and the first to check out. Apparently, [livejournal.com profile] znova was the only person in the area to realize that the Sterling Best Buy had Wii Fits. (If you're local and you want one, go NOW. They're stacked on and below a table near the Ipods in the middle of the store.)

I'm practically bouncing in my giddiness.
melaniesuzanne: (Let's get physical)
Monday: five minutes on elliptical. I thought I was going to die.
Tuesday: eight minutes on elliptical. I thought I was going to die.
Wednesday: TWENTY minutes on elliptical. I thought I was going to die around minute 7, but I pushed on, telling myself: "Just two more minutes. I can do this for two more minutes." Oh, and seventy-five crunches. Rawr.

Thursday: we'll see if I can move in the morning.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] znova's heads-up, I'm going to be standing at the Sterling Best Buy's front doors tomorrow when they open so I can grab a Wii Fit. Hopefully they didn't sell out between her posting and the 9pm closing time.

In other news, Kit's bathroom habits appear to have improved. Kitty TMI ) If it's the latter, we're all very, very happy about this.
