I was feeling well enough to sew last night and I finished the sleeves to go with the peach gamurra. I was too worn out after the sleeves to do any handwork on the actual dress, though. I should be able to finish both arm holes before tonight's call and perhaps even begin tacking down the lining. I doubt I will, but I would like to finish this dress before Friday so that I can focus on painting the pavilion top this weekend.

My dad and stepmom are in town this weekend and we'll get to see the DC fireworks from his hotel room. I'm pretty stoked about that (and about seeing them and showing off the house, of course). Their visit takes a chunk out of project time, but I'd probably be vegging out during that time anyway. I don't expect to pull off any decoration beyond stripes for this Pennsic thanks to my hemming, hawing, and procrastination, but that's okay.

In and around painting, I'd like to make two more gamurras (Atlantian blue and goose turd green), finish the gold and red giornea I've cut out, and perhaps make another giornea. Oh, and figure out headwear. My chin length hair won't cut it for historical hair.

Not panicking. Nope.

Okay, now I'm really curious and will have to go look up gamurra and giornea.

Oops, sorry! I'm going to steal [livejournal.com profile] kath_a's photos to depict the garments.

Gamurra: Italian fitted kirtle. The sleeves can be sewn or pinned on.

Giornea: Tabbard-style gown worn over the gamurra. The sides and front are not sewn closed. The front can be belted or clasped closed.

Yeah, I've looked them up and came across these pictures, among other. (OOoo....want one....) You'll look so pretty!

Now I understand gamurra and giornea.

Flowing and practical in linen.

Super spiffy in fancy fabrics.

Straight forward to embellish and accessorize.

Well ... you could make a balzo. ;)

Though, honestly ... I think it'd be more comfortable, not to mention less time-consuming, to go with the simple linen (and/or silk?) caps in the Botticelli portraits at http://www.wga.hu/html/b/botticel/7portrai/02lady.html or http://www.wga.hu/html/b/botticel/7portrai/03youngw.html (though [livejournal.com profile] salviati can certainly say someting if I'm misinformed about the relative comfort of a balzo; perhaps I am totally incorrect in my assumptions, and they are like a La-Z-Boy for the head) ;)

Yeah... no. Not for wandering around Pennsic. :) I do love the Young Woman's cap, though.

Huh. Now isn't the Lady's sheer overgown gorgeous...

I feel compelled to point out that the plural of balzo, in Italian, is balzi. I think that says something, right there. :-D

No, I would not say that the balzo is like a La-Z-Boy for the head. It's more like a clunky old recliner that might tip over at any moment and requires a crane to get out of. I haven't worn mine since before Tommy was born, because kid-wrangling and balzi don't really mix.

Pippa, I have a cuffia (coif) pattern that you can copy if you want. I forgot about that when we were geeking the other night. It's easy to make and you can dress it up in a variety of ways.

That'd be fantastic, thanks! Will you be around Thursday evening?

Yep, as far as I know. I'll dig out a copy of the pattern for you. I think I may even have a class handout/notes for it. :-)

I still have the picture of your tent. I've added photoshop stripes and look to have time today for arches :) Not sure if you'll actually do any of this, but wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten in the craziness that has been my life lately.
