We took off around 8am Saturday and took the 15N > 340 > 70W > 68W > 79N route to avoid the traffic slow-down before Breezewood and the reported delays on the PA Turnpike. Got to Cooper's Lake at 1:30 and sat on the Battlefield for a while. Saw lots of Atlantian stickers on cars and VA and MD license plates, but recognized only [livejournal.com profile] tashadandelion who is neither Atlantian nor VAian/MDer.
Waiting on the battlefield. )

We trolled in around a quarter of 3 and found Ravenstreet in E05. Everyone else had set up their tents (they all drove up Friday) and were puttering about camp. Hubbyfink and I set to putting our pavilion up. For some reason, we were both pretty brain fried and the set-up took way longer than it should have. But we were in good spirits and continued our promise of being sweet to each other during set-up. (Packing the truck on Friday was not quite so sweet.)

After a couple of hours, everything was out of the truck and in the pavilion. We were ready to visit a few other camps. We grabbed Sian for the joyride and, after dropping Wulfwyn's parcel at Royal, headed over to N31 so Hubbyfink could visit with [livejournal.com profile] paleobob while Sian and I checked in on Ponte Alto. We assisted [livejournal.com profile] azpapillion, [livejournal.com profile] weebaby, and Brigid with setting up Plastic Fantastic and learned many interesting uses for ball snuggers. We then took a leisurely drive around the lake, accidentally going the wrong way on one-way streets, and wound back up in camp.

Hubbyfink and I then wandered up towards the food court for dinner. En route, we found the Revival Clothing team in need of assistance with setting up their pavilion and helped out for a bit. While dining, we visited with [livejournal.com profile] make_your_move and her campmates. We wandered off and crossed paths with [livejournal.com profile] nq3x and [livejournal.com profile] rh_intern and learned the tale of woe which was their day of travel. Oof. We continued down Battle Road looking for [livejournal.com profile] pinkleader, but alas her camp was empty. The kitchen garden looked pretty spiff, though. We continued on to Stierbach and visited with His Excellency, Ignacio, and Blitha until dark. We headed home and stopped to say hi to [livejournal.com profile] thatpotteryguy, [livejournal.com profile] smiep, and [livejournal.com profile] jljonsn. Our last local encounter was [livejournal.com profile] herveus who was in very good spirits and who talked about very good spirits. :) We got back home to Ravenstreet and stayed up visiting with our campmates. I eventually got chilled and decided to head towards bed. But I noticed our back-door neighbor was home and said hi to [livejournal.com profile] stitchwhich. We wound up staying up even later chatting and laughing with her.

I have a hard time sleeping the first night at Pennsic despite how physically and mentally exhausted I am. I thought ahead this time and brought along Tylenol PM to knock myself out. It eventually worked and I got a full night's sleep. Something else that helped was the chilly temperature which kept the crunchy beetles away. We had no bugs in bed with us all night. Yay!

Sunday dawned just as beautifully as Saturday had set. The humidity was fairly high, but the temps were low and the breeze was steady. Loading the camp's storage unit into the rental truck and unloading the gear into camp went VERY quickly. Setting up the dining tent also went fairly quickly. We started slowing down with the kitchen tent and dining fly as the humidity crept even higher, though. But we eventually had enough of the camp infrastructure in place that Hubbyfink and I were able to leave guilt-free at 2:30. I snapped a photo of our pavilion just before we left. )

We took the 79S > 76E > 70E > 340 > 15S route back home and hit the Amaranth delay where we sat for about 45 minutes. But we still managed to get home around 7:30. We were both clean and shiny and relaxed before "True Blood" aired.

[livejournal.com profile] vikingsparrow asked for progress pictures and here they are. Here's what the pavilion looked like at Pennsic last year (and Gulf Wars and Sapphire Joust this year). )

I was lazy when I got home from work last night and didn't pull out the pavilion roof until 8pm or so. I then spent the next four hours or so drawing the lattice pattern and circles around the valance and along the ridge while shifting Margie and Oreo around my drawing areas. They like to "hep". The pencil lines were fairly light so I didn't take a picture of that step.

I got up this morning at the crack of a quarter after ten and set to painting. My furry housemates kept me company until Oreo stepped on a freshly painted blue line. Luckily, I snatched him off the tent roof before he could make another step. I did too good a job cleaning the paint off his foot. )

After that excitement, I banished the cats from the craft room and then finished painting the ridge decorations without assistance. Ridge decoration as of today at noon: )

I'm pretty happy with how the ridge has turned out. When that section is dry, I'll start working on the valance. Wheeee!

Okay. Tomorrow night I am pulling out the roof of my pavilion and I am completing the valance and ridge line paint job. Okay, it'll probably take most of the weekend to complete the project, but I'm going to start the project tomorrow night, by gum!

Before I get to the weekend part, though, I want to note that today was the first day I did not drag my carcass out of bed. I actually felt good this morning. I would have felt even better had Oreo not crawled under the comforter and attacked my bedmouse-like feet through the sheet. It's not too bad when the comforter protects tender feet from sharp claws; it's very bad when there's only a sheet between feet and claws. He's still learning the rules of the house and testing boundaries. I have to remind myself that Margie and Basil tried my patience and nerves when they were adolescents.

But, the weekend. The Herndon Festival starts tonight. I don't know if I'll head over Friday or Saturday, but I'm definitely going. I'd like to find something fun and funky for the nieces' third birthday gifts. I'm going to hit the Sterling Farmers' Market Sunday morning, too. On Sunday afternoon, Hubbyfink and I will be in Annapolis for the twins' birthday party.

At some point, I want to drag the roof of the pavilion up to the craft room and decorate it a bit more with paint. I've had some ideas about how to spruce up the straight lines and make the roof more spiffy. Based on Oreo's behavior whenever I'm in the craft room, I will absolutely have to banish all four-leggeds from the room while I paint. Seeing Basil's blue footprints on the tent walls this weekend made me smile, but we don't need blue footprints on the roof as well.

T-minus one week until I'm in a cube next to a window. Wheeeee!

Highlights
The quick-n-dirty shade fly I'd crafted from a Wal-Mart painters tarp was The Place To Be in our camp on Saturday and that pleased me to no end. I guess most folks haven't seen the pavilion since I painted it last summer: it got lots of oohs and aahs and that also pleased me to no end. The baronial potluck on Saturday night was one of the finest meals I've ever had while camping. Roasting marshmallows and then staying up way too late telling tales around the fire was pretty darn awesome, too.

Lowlights
Friday afternoon traffic on I-95. Setting up in the rain. No sleep Friday night. The oppressive heat during take-down on Sunday.

Notes
I was happy that [livejournal.com profile] pirategirleee and I were able to get all our gear in the truck and nothing -- not even tent poles -- was on the roof. Still need to experiment with the packing configuration, but I feel confident that I'll be able to get nearly all the Pennsic gear in the truck. Hubbyfink thinks we may have to put the poles on the roof to make room for the bed, but we'll see.

The Incredible's nav system did a great job! The "Where" app was great in that it found the Cracker Barrel we wanted to go to for dinner on Friday. I <3 my phone.

In addition to making new smocks, I need to make some loose-fitting hanging-around-camp clothes. I think I'm going to break down and make a banded stola or two for when I don't feel like being all laced up.

I said I was going to paint my pavilion today and I am. So far I have painted two-inch wide stripes along six of the ten seams of one wall. Due to space constraints in the craft room (and the size of the panels in between seams), I can paint only three seams and then I have to break to let the paint dry. After my first break, which was extended for lunch, I returned to the craft room and discovered that something extra had been added to one and a quarter panels. )

I was feeling well enough to sew last night and I finished the sleeves to go with the peach gamurra. I was too worn out after the sleeves to do any handwork on the actual dress, though. I should be able to finish both arm holes before tonight's call and perhaps even begin tacking down the lining. I doubt I will, but I would like to finish this dress before Friday so that I can focus on painting the pavilion top this weekend.

My dad and stepmom are in town this weekend and we'll get to see the DC fireworks from his hotel room. I'm pretty stoked about that (and about seeing them and showing off the house, of course). Their visit takes a chunk out of project time, but I'd probably be vegging out during that time anyway. I don't expect to pull off any decoration beyond stripes for this Pennsic thanks to my hemming, hawing, and procrastination, but that's okay.

In and around painting, I'd like to make two more gamurras (Atlantian blue and goose turd green), finish the gold and red giornea I've cut out, and perhaps make another giornea. Oh, and figure out headwear. My chin length hair won't cut it for historical hair.

Not panicking. Nope.

Sundry

Somedays it feels like it's just me and my boss against the world. He gets pounded with questions from TPTB and I dole out answers to those questions with ease. Those are the good days. Today is one of those days. Today I do not hate my job.

My stupid tooth has sucked away all my mad spending money. At least I had the funds to cover the repair.

The Prius is going back in the shop tonight. The warning lights of DOOM popped back on and stayed on during Hubbyfink's commutes yesterday. He's very annoyed. I say he's cursed because I had no problems with the car during Saturday's road trip.

I am barely controlling myself from attacking the dayshade with more stencilling. I want to go nuts on the back wall and/or roof. I tell myself it's blingy enough but I don't want to listen. Mars needs more bases upon which to stencil. What Mars really needs is to channel that energy into making cardboard templates for the pavilion's design.

I finally wised up and printed copies of the tent picture. Upon those copies, I sketched out designs. I've finally decided what I want to do; of course, the paper copy is at home and today I'm in the cube farm. You will have to wait to see the winning design, Gentle Readers. Ack! T-minus six and a half weeks until Land Grab.

Last night's and this morning's storms were fantastic. I drifted to sleep as the rain pounded our roof and then awoke when the deluge started anew this morning. I dreamt of Pennsic and sleeping in my pavilion during a storm. Seeing lightning flashes through canvas is both exhilirating and terrifying.

I've been thinking about Pennsic a lot lately. I guess it's that time of year where I'm longing for a snap of warm weather and ready to get projects underway. I've been perusing pictures of people's pavilions and interiors and getting all sorts of ideas about decor. I will be the spokesmodel for Better Homes & Pavilions one day.

Tomorrow [livejournal.com profile] pirategirleee and I head to the wilds of Havre de Grace, Maryland to view the 2nd annual Battle of Clontarf. I'm not sure what to expect beyond Vikings, Vikings, and more Vikings. Should be a pretty day for it.

I feel completely rejuvenated. The glorious weekend weather, sleeping with bedroom windows open, spending time with wonderful friends... it all made for much happier Melanie.

[livejournal.com profile] zipmeister helped me set up an Xbox live account Friday night and now I'm waiting for friends and family to "friend" me back so we can pester each other in yet another venue. I also spent a few hours zapping raiders and mutants in Fallout 3 and pounding the drums in Rock Band 2. I finished reading Coraline before bed.

[livejournal.com profile] pirategirleee and Cassie rode with me up to Kingdom Arts & Sciences Festival Saturday morning. We arrived just before noon and spent a whirlwind day of perusing displays, visiting with friends from near and far, shopping, and singing. You know my whinging about SCA events last week? I'm actually feeling kind of rejuvenated there, too. Seeing so many amazing and gorgeous displays as well as far-flung friends with whom I never get enough time recharged my batteries. It didn't hurt that nearly everyone was completely ga-ga over my rust-colored kirtle. :) I realized that I need to mend and make clothes. Everything I wore, with the exception of my headwrap, had at least one hole in it. Shock, horror, and embarrassment.

So... I know what I'll be doing with all my "free" time. Plus, I still want to paint my pavilion before Pennsic. Anybody want to help?

Sunday was spent catching up on laundry, cleaning cat boxes (OMG), BSG, Big Love, Rock Band, and watching home improvement shows with the Hubbyfink and getting ideas for the basement redo while gentle breezes wafted through the townhouse. Yay, spring!
