It's been a lovely visit. Mom and I got lots of quality time together and not all of it was spent harvesting our Farmville crops. I even got to spend a fair amount of time with the siblings. We're all usually so rushed during these visits. I'm not sure what made the difference this time.

[livejournal.com profile] beaz and Melinda's baby still hasn't arrived, but he's dropped since Friday night. She's been carrying him really high and didn't look all that pregnant, to be honest. Tonight, she looked oh-my-god-I'm-going-to-pop-at-any-moment pregnant. Funny what a couple of days will do. She's still scheduled for induction Tuesday morning.

Mom and I forced Pete and [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister to go see Starry Nights. Too bad everybody else in Memphis had the same idea. Good thing we took Zippy's Ford Focus hybrid; we might have otherwise run out of gas while sitting on Walnut Grove for 2.5 hours just to get into the park. Yeah, we should've bailed. We're a stubborn bunch. I refuse to say whether or not the wait was worth the display.

It's been tough, but I've kept up with my schoolwork while out of town. Mom's cats have been just as helpful blocking the light on my still lifes as mine are. Good kitties.

In Memphis

Arrived Thursday at 8:55pm and was retrieved from the airport by Mom, [livejournal.com profile] beaznuts and Mrs Beaz. Had planned on spending today goofing around with [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister but Mom's car battery kicked the bucket and we spent an ungodly amount of time working on that today. We did manage to sneak in a trip to Sonic for lunch; Mom gave herself brainfreeze by drinking a strawberry limeade too fast. Zippy treated us to takeaway BBQ, sides, and 'nana pudding from the Germantown Commissary. Hubbyfink will be happy to know the Zippy did not, in fact, take me to either the Toyota or Mini dealerships. And even though I love Zippy's new car, I don't want one just like it.

Tomorrow is Bear's 1st birthday party brunch (his actual birthday was today) and I'll get to see him, mama Mimi and daddy Chris. Mom and I have to get up early to prep a couple of dishes and help Mimi with set-up. Afterwards, Mom and I will sneak in a trip to DSW and pedicures. I'm hoping to get some pool time, too. It's hot and muggy down here, even moreso than the heat and mugginess in Virginia.

Baby brother John is off at college (UT:Knoxville) and it's so weird not seeing or hearing him. I almost miss the near-constant thumping bass from his video games late at night.

...and it was grand.

Friday night the 'fink and I met [livejournal.com profile] dmn4nr and spouseling and K & J for dinner at Ted's Montana Grill. Mmmm... steaky and lemondroppy goodness. And for once they actually had key lime pie when I was ready for dessert. Got home about 10 minutes after the BSG premiere but caught up quickly with the DVR.

Saturday morning I took off for the not-quite-wilds of Pennsylvania to retrieve [livejournal.com profile] danabren and meet [livejournal.com profile] woodwindy at the east coast BPAL mecca. I had a couple of false starts, though. Since the air temp in Sterling was a mere 3 degree farenheit (the coldest I've ever been), both the Prius and Jeepfink were cranky. The Prius wouldn't stay in gear; it kept slipping from drive into neutral. When I couldn't make it to the end of the street without it slipping three times, I decided I shouldn't take that particular vehicle on my three-and-a-half-hour sojourn. Blessedly, Jeepfink started but the brake light stayed on through much of northward trip. The brakes were fine, if a little mushy; I made sure to keep extra braking distance between myself and other vehicles.

But! The meat of the trip: BPAL! Shelly had prototypes of the new Lupercalia blends and I fell in love with only a few of them. I was disappointed with the Ode to Aphrodite line and surprised to like many of the Shunga line. Shelly didn't have any of the Lupercalias in stock so I managed to escape the shop with dropping a fairly small chunk of change instead of the significant chunk I'd planned upon. We wound up hanging around the shop for several hours as it seemed that Shelly really needed some folks to talk with. She was in bright spirits when we finally headed out for our late Sonic lunch.

[livejournal.com profile] woodwindy and her friend headed home after our quick lunch with everyone piled in the Jeepfink, and [livejournal.com profile] danabren and I hit the kitchen stores at the local outlet mall. She talked me into a set of three springform pans for $10. I don't know what I'll do with them, but I'll be ready when the day I need them comes around. I got her a light-up, burbling goldfish; she got me a mouse-shaped cookie cutter.

Our enthusiasm for shopping finally waned and we rushed back to [livejournal.com profile] danabren's neighborhood for sushi. Post roll, million dollar roll, and godzilla roll, ahoy! And lots and lots of hot tea. [livejournal.com profile] danabren said she'd turn me into a geisha yet. I lamented that I should've picked up those chopsticks at the kitchen store for my hair. She gave me a look. I laughed and said, "Oh don't worry. I know that only maiko wear chopsticks in their hair." She rolled her eyes.

We parted company after dinner, and my drive home through the countryside (I decided to forgo the interstates and beltways) was uneventful. Did you know that "Ski Roundtop" is the Gettysburg Round Top? I hadn't put the proverbial two and two together until I passed the visitors center exit and then saw the ski routes all lit up on the mountain. Neat!

Yesterday, I was mostly sluglike. I did a little bit of straightening around the house and Hubbyfink and I put away the laundry which has been languishing in baskets for over a week, but that was it. It was delightful.

melaniesuzanne: (Merry Ratmas!)
We made to Germantown safely. Left Sterling at 7am ET Saturday and arrived at Mom's front door about 7:15pm CT Saturday. Hubbyfink was an absolute saint and drove most of the way while I dozed feverishly through nearly all of Virginia and a small portion of Tennessee. Ate at the Kingsport Sonic.

Pete's sister Jan is visiting from Australia. I haven't seen her since late 1990 when she and her kids visited for Christmas. [livejournal.com profile] beaznuts and his girlfriend Melinda stopped by to visit about an hour after we got to Mom's. Poor Beaz was soo sick; he was much worse than Mom (who also has a cold) and me.

Today Mom, Aunt Jan, and I shopped. And shopped. And shopped some more. Hubbyfink found us at Dress Barn where I was buying a whole new wardrobe (I was, and still am, going through an I-hate-everything-I-brought-to-Memphis phase). We left Mom and Jan at Stein Mart and boogied back home with a surgical strike on Tarzhay and Backyard Burgers en route. [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister showed up at Mom's house shortly after we got back home. Zippy was kind enough to arrange for us to see long-missed friends Andy and Carol. (Andy was our DM for D&D and the Toreador annoyance to my Malkavian in Vampire: the Masquerade back in the day). I don't think Hubbyfink's met Andy and Carol and I'm pretty sure I haven't seen them in about seven years. We went out to the Germantown Commissary and stuffed ourselves silly on barbecued pig and lemon icebox pie.

It's cold down here; I don't think it got above freezing today and it's supposed to be as cold tomorrow, but will be up in the 60s by week's end. I guess we just barely missed an ice storm back home. Yikes.

Baby brother John -- the football hero -- and his buddies have been playing Rock Band tonight and he was kind enough to let his middle-aged sister hang out and watch him and his friends play. They even let me sing a few songs and fistbumped me when I got 100%. Heh.

Tomorrow's schedule includes more shopping -- this time with [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister so we can get each other's birthday-mas gifts -- and picking up Aunt Trisha from the airport. Things weren't going very nicely for her at home and we talked her into catching a last-minute flight up from Orlando. When she's here, every bed in the house will be taken. Heh. Plus, I'll finally get to see Mimi, Chris and Charlie Bear tomorrow. They were supposed to come over today, but Mimi was afraid of Bear catching Mom's and my colds. He hasn't been sick yet and she doesn't want his first cold to be during Christmas.

Hubbyfink's been asleep for a couple of hours now. Since I can't stop yawning, I should probably go join him.

A quiet turkeyless Thanksgiving day with the Hubbyfink was followed by a busy Black Friday where I did my part to shore up the US economy. Thanks to an award from work, I was able to get Hubbyfink an Xbox360 as an early Christmas gift and scored an 8Gig Nano for myself.

[livejournal.com profile] psalite, [livejournal.com profile] pirategirleee, and I visited Colonial Williamsburg on Saturday, with an obligatory stop at the Williamsburg Sonic for good measure. We were smart and parked at the visitor center and caught a bus over to Colonial Williamsburg. We met a delightful lady in Mistress Dickerson's shop with whom we discussed things Regency while purchasing yummy soaps. We oohed and aahed at the decorations (I want to make a pomegranate and pineapple wreath), shopped 'til we very nearly dropped, and dined like kings at the Kings Arms Tavern. The whole day we kept saying to each other: "This is SO much fun!" And it was.

So, between Friday and Saturday's expeditions, I have just about finished my Christmas shopping. Need one more item for my father and something for my brothers and I'm done. Yay!

No, the Daily Ornament Report hasn't cranked up. It might not run at all this year. Since we're going to Memphis for Christmas, I'm debating even putting up the tree. Plus, weekends are full: this weekend is Unevent, next weekend is Ponte Alto's Winter's Welcome Revel (which I'm autocratting), and the following weekend we leave for Memphis. We may do what we did our first Christmas in the house and just put presents under the tabletop tree.

Oh em gee

If everyday could be like yesterday, I would be very happy, if broke and slightly damp, woman.

[livejournal.com profile] dawnhutchings and I retrieved [livejournal.com profile] danabren just before noon and arrived at the East Coast BPAL Mecca about an hour later where we met [livejournal.com profile] woodwindy and her friend (whose name escapes me). We browsed, we sniffed, we bought. A lot. Scents I expected to love disappointed me, but perfumes I expected to feel meh about made me fall head-over-heels. I was smart this time and brought little dot stickers so everyone could map out on their arms which scents they had tried and, most importantly, where they had tried them. Like a doofus, I didn't use my own stickers and as I huffed the crook of my elbow I lamented not knowing what perfume I'd applied there because it smelled SO GOOD. Next time.

It still amuses me how large a role personal body chemistry plays in whether or not certain oils "work". [livejournal.com profile] woodwindy and I must have similar chemistry because we both make grabby hands at the amber scents. And [livejournal.com profile] dawnhutchings and [livejournal.com profile] danabren are similar; one perfume that made me wrinkle my nose and cry, "Dirty ashtray!" made both of them say, "OM NOM NOM!"

Next on the agenda was Sonic. We arrived at the height of a hurricane, and like idjits, we actually ran around in that incredible wind and rain trying to figure out how best to enjoy our Sonic experience. We finally found the lee side of the building, parked cars next to one another, and then everyone piled into Jeepfink. Cheese coneys, poppers, mozarella sticks, ocean waters, shakes and cherry limeades were the orders of the day. Mmmm... Sonic. We continued trading and swapping perfumes with each other.

We parted company with [livejournal.com profile] woodwindy and her friend, and met up with [livejournal.com profile] danabren's mom at the local gem show. With only an hour until closing, we snapped up some pretty good deals. I was able to cross three family members off my Christmas list with that trip. Whoo hoo!

Back to [livejournal.com profile] danabren's house where we decanted bottles of the Yule scents for the decant circle as well as some of our personal stashes for one another. Aside from my not realizing the rectangular labels I'd brought were clear ("I can't read!"), the process went smoothly and was actually pretty fun. Although, I'm glad we weren't trying to decant the entire Yule line. Crazy-making that would have been.

And then, there was sushi. We feasted upon Sakura roll (I don't remember the ingredients), another roll (I don't remember the ingredients), Godzilla roll (crunchy crab meat roll topped with eel -- I made my O face a few times), and Scorpion roll (half spider roll, half something roll, topped with eel). Oh yeah, baby, YEAH. Red Bean, Green Tea, and Mango ice creams rounded out the most amazing and delicious meal. We thanked the chef profusely.

[livejournal.com profile] dawnhutchings and I retrieved our belongings from [livejournal.com profile] danabren's and hit the road towards home. We can't wait to do it all again in either February or March.

It's dead in the cube farm. Dead dead dead. I have stuff I could do, but I don't wanna.

Hubbyfink got a reprieve from Martha-spotting last night when I found a Terry Jones barbarians series we hadn't seen. I questioned how the Germanic tribes' loyalties to Rome worked -- it seemed counter-intuitive to me -- and, of course, Hubbyfink was delighted to explain it all. During another segment, someone mentioned the Gauls giving Germanic tribes good thrashings up to and including the Napoleonic wars. I turned to Hubbyfink and said, "Oh, so Hitler was just getting even for the Napoleonic wars."

As Hubbyfink drew a large breath with which to reeducate me, I said, "Stop. Don't. I was making a joke. I really don't care. Really." He blew out his breath and said, "Good, because I don't know that much about the Napoleonic era."

And in my world, Celts were dirty, patchouli-wearing hippies. Hubbyfink told me I win. I haven't figured out if it's a jar of Turtle Wax or a Brand New Car!, though.

Three out of four items/lots posted on freecycle have left my home. Yay! Anybody local want two 36x72" and one 48x72" fruitwood matchstick roller blinds?

BPAL order from last month arrived and I have Mouse's Long & Sad Tale, Shoggoth, and No. 93 Engine in my clutches. Mouse... is vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood. It's so light and feminine but has some serious staying power and a bit of throw. I'm very happy with it. I also got six frimps which will probably get tested this evening.

And speaking of BPAL, I'm making another pilgrimage up to PA to retrieve [livejournal.com profile] danabren and sniff the Yule scents at Nails, Etc. Anybody want to keep me company on the drive up and back on Nov 15? There'll be a stop at Sonic for limeades/slushes/tots... Banjo music is negotiable.

Friday night: Margie & Basil got poked and prodded by the vet. They both look and act healthy. Vet will call me tomorrow with blood-work results. Margie might get a Bad Kitty! sticker on her records because she hissed and snapped at anyone who isn't me. So very unlike her. Total cost for yearly senior citizen checkups for two healthy cats = nearly $400. Thank heavens they aren't sick.

Saturday: Raced up to [livejournal.com profile] danabren's place for BPAL, Sonic, and Halloween goodness. Saw [livejournal.com profile] woodwindy. Purchased many discontinued limited edition perfumes and swapped bottles and imps with friends. Must update my BPAL spreadsheet and get to trading and selling some of my unloved imps and bottles. Apparently, I have some rare and highly-sought-after imps in my unloved pile. Who knew?

SOOOONIC. XL chili-cheese coney. Tots. Large cherry limeade. Large fried ice cream blast split three ways. My stomach hated me a few hours later, but I was very happy at the time.

Halloweenies! Visited the local Spirit Store where I procurred a blood-stained bag, blood-spattered machete, and derbys and top hats for future Victorian hat goodness. Visited the local Dollar Tree where I procurred a little sign stating "Blood donors needed. See the count." (It's hanging around my desk name tag now.) Halloween-themed ziplock baggies will make lunches more fun.

Drove home the scenic route via Gettysburg. Saw nothing of the supernatural ilk. Darn. Would have been more scenic had it not been pitch black outside.

Sunday: Cleaned out the kitchen and much of the dining room. My nutrisystem food no longer lives in a big cardboard box on the kitchen floor. Tempting junk food was either trashed (if opened or expired) or bagged up for a food pantry. Canned goods I shouldn't eat were also bagged up for the food pantry. Anybody local want pretty serving platters or tupperware stuff? The former nutrisystem box is now full of "free to good home" stuff.

Kit is definitely using the litterbox again. HOORAY!

Oh, and stairs are no longer problematic. In fact, I'm bounding up them with hardly any effort at all. Could be the weight loss, could be the elliptical. Either way I'm happy.

This past weekend was a Super Concentrated Memphis visit. In seventy hours I enjoyed family time, enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] zipmeister time, drank a cherry limeade, ate ribs from the Germantown Commissary, shopped with Mom, cleaned house, saw a movie, swam in the pool, drank a margarita, and played with the dogs, plus the previously blogged tailgating and football game but that was something out of the ordinary. The only things I didn't do were see my dad or [livejournal.com profile] beaznuts, but I did spend a few hours visiting with [livejournal.com profile] beaznuts' girlfriend (she opted to skip the Six Flags over St. Louis trip which kept my brother from me).

I am completely head-over-heels in love with my sister's and mother's high efficiency washing machines. Completely. I'm also pretty enamoured of Mimi and Chris' bathroom renovation. I snapped lots of photos.

The melatonin I took at bedtime made for interesting dreams and disoriented periods of wakefulness. Margie woke me at one point by kneading (and drooling) on my pillow. My arms were wrapped around her and I spent some time trying to figure out which of Mom's dogs was so small and silky. Answer: neither!

One more baby picture and I'm done until Christmas. Maybe. )
