Newcomers, haunts, and BPAL
Oct. 22nd, 2008 11:54 amThe October newcomers' meeting for Ponte Alto is at my house this Friday evening at 7pm. If you're local and either interested in the SCA or already in the SCA, come on over and enjoy good company and good snacks. Let me know if you need directions.
This Saturday's spooktacular event is the Manassas Haunted Trail at 9505 Dean Park Drive, Manassas, VA. I haven't decided yet if folks should meet at my place or at
pirategirleee's (because the haunt is closer to her place). I'll post time and location after careful negotiations with herself.
Or maybe not. The site states that this attraction has been closed this year due to the death of a local teen. Leesburg Cornfield MAiZE, instead perhaps? There's also the Mystery in Liberia Mansion tour in Manassas. Tours run from 5:30pm to 9pm and are about an hour long.
There are several decant circles going for Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab perfume oils over on
sca_bpal including Wind in the Willows, Marchen, and the Yule 2008 scents. These circles are a great way to start (or beef up) one's collection without dropping a whole lotta green on untested scents. Come and join the (fairly low-traffic) community.

Slow news day
Oct. 10th, 2008 12:53 pmIt's dead in the cube farm. Dead dead dead. I have stuff I could do, but I don't wanna.
Hubbyfink got a reprieve from Martha-spotting last night when I found a Terry Jones barbarians series we hadn't seen. I questioned how the Germanic tribes' loyalties to Rome worked -- it seemed counter-intuitive to me -- and, of course, Hubbyfink was delighted to explain it all. During another segment, someone mentioned the Gauls giving Germanic tribes good thrashings up to and including the Napoleonic wars. I turned to Hubbyfink and said, "Oh, so Hitler was just getting even for the Napoleonic wars."
As Hubbyfink drew a large breath with which to reeducate me, I said, "Stop. Don't. I was making a joke. I really don't care. Really." He blew out his breath and said, "Good, because I don't know that much about the Napoleonic era."
And in my world, Celts were dirty, patchouli-wearing hippies. Hubbyfink told me I win. I haven't figured out if it's a jar of Turtle Wax or a Brand New Car!, though.
Three out of four items/lots posted on freecycle have left my home. Yay! Anybody local want two 36x72" and one 48x72" fruitwood matchstick roller blinds?
BPAL order from last month arrived and I have Mouse's Long & Sad Tale, Shoggoth, and No. 93 Engine in my clutches. Mouse... is vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood. It's so light and feminine but has some serious staying power and a bit of throw. I'm very happy with it. I also got six frimps which will probably get tested this evening.
And speaking of BPAL, I'm making another pilgrimage up to PA to retrieve
danabren and sniff the Yule scents at Nails, Etc. Anybody want to keep me company on the drive up and back on Nov 15? There'll be a stop at Sonic for limeades/slushes/tots... Banjo music is negotiable.

More BPAL mutterings
Sep. 24th, 2008 08:29 pm...as I listen to a conference call.
After my surprising experience with Midnight Kiss, I decided to give two unloved scents -- The Darkling Thrush and Order of the Dragon: The Carpathian Mountains -- another go. ( Results were mixed. )

It's only Wednesday?
Sep. 24th, 2008 10:44 amThis week has been 3,000 years long. Work hasn't been the typical go-go-GO frenzy and I'm spending a bit of time twiddling my thumbs. It'll heat back up soon, I'm sure.
Choir practice last night went well. So well that
carthew turned us loose early. She invited us to join her on the trek to Lochmere tonight for the Lochmere Music Guild practice (we're singing together at their investiture this weekend); if I didn't have a call tonight, I would have been tempted.
Got home and played with my new BPAL scents. I had the oddest experience with one scent in particular: Midnight Kiss -- Eternal desire, unquenchable passion: red musk, cocoa absolute, Nepalese amber, red sandalwood, aged patchouli, nicotiana, and blood wine. In the bottle, it's a decent-enough perfume scent. When it's wet on my skin it stinks of stale cigarettes. I almost gagged. Most of the forum reviewers state they get a cherry cola or cocoa smell. How very bizarre. As it dried down, though, the musk and sandalwood came out and I couldn't stop sniffing my wrist. I'm willing to get past the initial ick so I can enjoy the yummy dry-down.

Hooray! Autumn is here!
Sep. 22nd, 2008 12:05 pmFriday night: Margie & Basil got poked and prodded by the vet. They both look and act healthy. Vet will call me tomorrow with blood-work results. Margie might get a Bad Kitty! sticker on her records because she hissed and snapped at anyone who isn't me. So very unlike her. Total cost for yearly senior citizen checkups for two healthy cats = nearly $400. Thank heavens they aren't sick.
Saturday: Raced up to
danabren's place for BPAL, Sonic, and Halloween goodness. Saw
woodwindy. Purchased many discontinued limited edition perfumes and swapped bottles and imps with friends. Must update my BPAL spreadsheet and get to trading and selling some of my unloved imps and bottles. Apparently, I have some rare and highly-sought-after imps in my unloved pile. Who knew?
SOOOONIC. XL chili-cheese coney. Tots. Large cherry limeade. Large fried ice cream blast split three ways. My stomach hated me a few hours later, but I was very happy at the time.
Halloweenies! Visited the local Spirit Store where I procurred a blood-stained bag, blood-spattered machete, and derbys and top hats for future Victorian hat goodness. Visited the local Dollar Tree where I procurred a little sign stating "Blood donors needed. See the count." (It's hanging around my desk name tag now.) Halloween-themed ziplock baggies will make lunches more fun.
Drove home the scenic route via Gettysburg. Saw nothing of the supernatural ilk. Darn. Would have been more scenic had it not been pitch black outside.
Sunday: Cleaned out the kitchen and much of the dining room. My nutrisystem food no longer lives in a big cardboard box on the kitchen floor. Tempting junk food was either trashed (if opened or expired) or bagged up for a food pantry. Canned goods I shouldn't eat were also bagged up for the food pantry. Anybody local want pretty serving platters or tupperware stuff? The former nutrisystem box is now full of "free to good home" stuff.
Kit is definitely using the litterbox again. HOORAY!
Oh, and stairs are no longer problematic. In fact, I'm bounding up them with hardly any effort at all. Could be the weight loss, could be the elliptical. Either way I'm happy.

No, we did not break open the Wii Fit as soon as I got home. Mostly because I didn't get home until 8:15 last night. Gruelling day. But I did manage to get to the gym before it closed and racked up 22 minutes on the elliptical. I really wanted 25, but I feared I wouldn't be able to make the walk to the Jeep if I pushed any harder. Plus the whole living in a three-story townhouse thing. Ugh, stairs.
I will most likely not break open the Wii Fit tonight, either, as I need to prep for tomorrow's pilgrimage to fair
danabren's home, BPAL-sniffage, and Spirit Store cruising. It makes my Halloween-loving heart burst with gladness, it does. Provided it's not too late, I'd like to take the scenic route home.
Sunday? Eh, Sunday is chock full of organizing because our house is driving me stark raving mad. We did a good job with the basement, but nothing has been done anywhere else. I'm cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and storage furniture in the dining room. How many serving platters does one family need anyway? Expect a "free to good home" post fairly soon.
